Exponential Day #2: the new (in)mobility has arrived to stay

Exponential Day #2: the new (in)mobility has arrived to stay

The day when the future was the present,” defined the Agency for Business Competitiveness (ACCIÓ) the second edition of the Exponential Day, the benchmark conference on business disruption.

This year we have had to face the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. A context in which our way of consuming, interacting, coexisting, working and learning has changed. But the new restrictions and the lockdown have made one thing very clear: we cannot leave home, or we must do so with absolute care. This factor gives rise to a new field for many people: immobility or, as the hashtag shared on social media stated, #BetterThanMoving.

A world was possible within this

The truth is that as a result of this context, we have observed the enormous plasticity of organizations and society. We verified this in our Emerging Capabilities Observatory report, in which we analyzed over 150 initiatives that reinvented themselves during the health crisis. We learned that another world was possible within this, and we reached five key observations:

  1. There is an emerging networked society and we need to learn to put data to produce value.

  2. We must explore productive flexibility and value what is open and underutilized.

  3. Our collaborators possess an incredible capacity for transformation and citizens can and should occupy a central role in the system.

  4. Business systems must restructure and to do so it is necessary to glimpse the value of the unique.

  5. Shared knowledge is essential in a context of a shared collective destination.

A disruptive workshop at Exponential Day #2

Weeks after the publication of this report and on the occasion of Exponential Day #2, we organized a 100% online workshop that more than 100 people could explore this new (in)mobility. Through our methodology Pentagrowth for designing disruptive business models, we worked on the 15 disruptive future scenarios that we introduced in the round table Why (non) mobility and exponential technologies will transform all businesses? led by Javier Creus, Diego Soroa and Rafel Fors prior to the Exponential Workshop.

In less than three hours, professionals from different sectors around the world came together to co-create business ideas and address the various challenges of new mobility. “The 15-minute city,” “the aerial neighborhood” or “traveling to enjoy and connecting to work,” were some of the future scenarios that were developed in this dynamic.

Among the participating teams, three ideas were selected as winners

  • In the scenario of regulating new mobility: artificial intelligence and open data, the opportunity to create a platform with autonomous and sustainable vehicles that can generate their own mobility services was envisioned. This will allow everyone to go where they want with safety and without polluting and thus have new transportation routes. The platform also allows the financing of various projects through crowdfunding.

  • In the scenario of living virtual lives, an abundance of many more possible worlds was projected. Realities in which deploying people's personalities virtually without limitations or social conditioning could offer humanity its most authentic "self", driving the shared transhumanity.

  • In the scenario of hybridization of presence, the possibility of having more free time, a higher quality of life and territorial balance was emphasized. In this way, anyone with vital concerns could reconnect with nature and the community and, through their greater personal knowledge and happiness, contribute value to the environment of which they are a part.

A change of vision

The current context and the Exponential Day left us with a clear vision: from now on, we will move for what excites us and will think twice if it is really necessary to take a plane to go to a distant meeting that could be done via video call. Those of us who can will work in remote places, hidden corners of the city to try to improve our quality of life. We will see an increase in opportunities in depopulated areas. We will travel out of genuine obligation or simple desire, and not from mere habit as we did before. And, moreover, mobility will become increasingly efficient, leading to a more sustainable world.
